MV BALENO 9 SINKS IN THE BATANGGAS SEA:
The number of missing passengers of a roll-on roll-off vessel that sank off Batangas province last weekend grew to 44 as of Tuesday morning, the Coast Guard said.
Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) commandant Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo said this was based on "new records" of passengers that they are now validating.
"Itong tally na ito nagsasabi, ang rescued 73 at anim ang casualties. At hinahanap pa rin natin 44 based on new records which we are still trying to validate (Based on the new records, we have rescued 73 passengers and we are still searching for 44. The death toll remains at six)," Tamayo said in an interview on dzBB radio.
An initial manifest showed there were 88 passengers and crew members aboard the RORO vessel Baleno-9 when it sank off Batangas.
However, the new figures cited by Tamayo indicates 123 people may have been aboard the ill-fated vessel.
Recovered from Mutya were P220,000 cash, a Nokia cell phone and a driver's license. Recovered from Peñaranda were a silver necklace and a Nokia N-79 phone.
On Monday, Coast Guard Mindoro head Lt. Cmdr. Alger Ricafrente said relatives of passengers not on the manifest had been asking them about their loved ones.
Tamayo, on the other hand, reassured the public of a fair and transparent investigation into the incident, after suspending two Coast Guard executives over the tragedy.
Temporarily relieved were PCG Calapan detachment commander Petty Officer 1 Danilo Sanchez and clearing officer Petty Officer 2 Rizal Maligaya.
Tamayo said the two will get a chance to air their side during the investigation.
"Walang whitewash (There will be no whitewash). Everything will be fair and transparent," he said in a separate interview on dzXL radio.
