GRPMHS celebrates christmas and newyear

Christmas[2] or Christmas Day[3][4] is an annual Christian holiday commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ.[5][6] It is celebrated on December 25, but this date is not known to be Jesus' actual birthday, and may have initially been chosen to correspond with either the day exactly nine months after some early Christians believed Jesus had been conceived,[7] a historical Roman festival,[8] or the date of the northern hemisphere's winter solstice.[9] Christmas is central to the Christmas and holiday season, and in Christianity marks the beginning of the larger season of Christmastide, which lasts twelve days.[10]

Although a Christian holiday, Christmas is also widely celebrated by many non-Christians,[1][11] and some of its popular celebratory customs have pre-Christian or secular themes and origins. Popular modern customs of the holiday include gift-giving, music, an exchange of greeting cards, church celebrations, a special meal, and the display of various decorations; including Christmas trees, lights, garlands, mistletoe, nativity scenes, and holly. In addition, Father Christmas (known as Santa Claus in some areas, including North America, Australia and Ireland) is a popular mythological figure in many countries, associated with the bringing of gifts for children.[12]

Because gift-giving and many other aspects of the Christmas festival involve heightened economic activity among both Christians and non-Christians, the holiday has become a significant event and a key sales period for retailers and businesses. The economic impact of Christmas is a factor that has grown steadily over the past few centuries in many regions of the world.

celebration yesterday?"

"Wouldn't miss it for the world. I wept through the whole thing. It was so beautiful."

"It's about time Joseph got himself a wife! A man his age ought to have a flock of children racing in and out of his shop by now."

"But he's so old for her. If he were twenty, maybe, a fourteen-year-old bride would be all right. But thirty?...

"Oh, he'll make her a good husband, mark my words. But I don't know about her. What kind of cook is she?"

Just then they had noticed Mary and the jabbering ceased. She could see them looking at her, though, sizing her up. It's not as if it's the first time they've seen me, Mary thought. I was born in Nazareth.

Bethrothed. Engaged. Mary smiled. Every girl's dream has come true for me. People already look at me as Joseph's wife. How can I stand to wait another whole year for the wedding ceremony? Oh, well, all the other girls wait, too, and they survive. Her thoughts began to picture what the wedding would be like....

Suddenly she heard a commanding voice: "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you."

She glanced up, and then gasped. A huge man stood over her. Mary instinctively cringed back into the corner. What kind of greeting was that for a peasant girl? What was going on here?

"Do not be afraid, Mary," the man went on, "you have found favor with God."

Favor with God? Who was this man? Mary relaxed a bit. He didn't seem threatening....

The man proceeded. "You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus..."

What? She had just been betrothed a day....

The man didn't pause. "He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end."

The ancient throne of the fabled King David? Certainly she was descended from David, as were thousands of others in Israel. But her son? Her son would be the Messiah prophesied of old? She was stunned. She looked around the room. The man made it sound so immediate, so imminent. Who was this man, speaking so boldly the promises to Israel? She looked up. An angel? Could it be? It seemed as if he was waiting for her to respond.

"Ah... how will this be," she stuttered, "since I am a virgin?" He must know she wasn't married yet!

The angel answered, but more slowly now, as if he had delivered his proclamation, and now was taking time to explain it. "Dear child," he began, "the Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God."

Her thoughts raced. So it wasn't going to be Joseph's child after all, but one conceived by God's Holy Spirit. Who would ever believe that? What would Joseph say? Divorce me as soon as I started to show, probably! How could he ever understand? And who would ever consider marrying the mother of a ... She couldn't bring herself to even think that bitter word. She could feel her face starting to flush and her ears burn.

And what would I do with such a child? I'm not some princess in a palace raising a king! Just a poor girl in an obscure mountain town. Doesn't he know how they treat children in this town whose mothers get pregnant before they marry?

But the angel was still speaking. "... Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month."

Elizabeth? She was nearly sixty! Mary hadn't seen her for years. How could it be? But it was! Elizabeth? She must be bubbling over joy right now! Six months pregnant? That would give the women in her town something to talk about!

The angel had stopped now. He was just standing there. Friendly, but with the bearing of a royal messenger awaiting an answer for his lord.

What should she say? Part of her wanted to shout, Oh, yes! The mother of Messiah. How exciting! How grand! What an honor...

But inside she felt a trapped, crawling sensation. What would it mean to become pregnant out of wedlock? Divorce, shame, shunning. A son who would never be really accepted by her neighbors. A boy they call cruel names. And she ... she would never be asked to marry. She'd live out her days alone, in her parents home....

Mary weighed the glory and the cost. But finally she knew what she must do. Glory and cost weren't the point at all, she realized. God has chosen me to be His special servant. He wants me to do this special thing for Him. And, even though it costs me everything I hold dear, I will do it! I will say Yes ... for Him!

Mary looked up at the man. And then reached out to the window sill to pull herself up until she was standing her full fourteen-year-old height before the towering angel. Her eyes met his, and she said very quietly. "I am the Lord's servant. May it be to me as you have said."

She thought she could see the great man smile gently for a long moment. Then he turned and was gone. Even as she felt the tears starting to well up within her, Mary stood tall.

How Can One Improve Spelling Skills

 (the RAY 2009-2010)

Tips for High School Student to Be A Better Speller ...................

As one gets into high school, he or she may realize that spelling is more important than originally believed. This article shows how it is never too late to improve!

Some people struggle with math, while others have difficulty expressing their thoughts in words. Yet others have another thing that they may wish to improve, be embarrassed about, or not know what to do about, and that is how to spell. This article shows how one can improve reading and vocabulary skills, but more importantly, how working on those two factors lends itself to likewise improving one's spelling skills and capabilities.

Why Is It So Important To Be A Good Speller In High School?

The main reason that this is so important, particularly to high school students, is that standardized tests dominate much of the American high school students' existence and play such a big role in their futures. With the revised SAT exam as well as Advanced Placement tests (taken for college credit in many instances) requiring the writing of essays on the spot, without a dictionary, thesaurus, or spell checking computer program, students need to be able to improvise and express themselves as well as they can in a conversation or interview.

In the latter instances, students may come across as intelligent and professional, as the conversation does not show what may be under the surface - difficulties with spelling. The essays, however, will expose all of that to college admissions officials, teachers, and if the student does not have others proofread applications, may follow them into the workforce etc. as well. It is of the utmost importance that less-than-par spellers try their best, particularly more so if the spelling difficulties are not tied with any learning disability, but rather, result from laziness or lack of attention to detail.

It is important to be a good speller in high school, because the written word plays a big role in all the decisions being made about the immediate future, whether it be on standardized tests that impact graduating high school, SATs to get into college, or applications for college or for a first full-time job. As much it is hard to accept being judged on one trait or difficulty alone, spelling is important, because it formulates first impressions of one's work and talents. Once one works a while, it may change, but in the case of high school students, that first impression means everything.

Useful Tips In Becoming A Good Student

By: Rex Oro

Being a good student means you have the ability to think. This is because the power of reasoning does not come automatically along with your intelligence. They are a separate entity. It is an ability and we the ones who have to develop them. Sharp thinking should be nourished and put to use until it grows because this will lead to a great mind.

Here are some useful tips that you can do to develop a sharp thinking:

1. Gauge your actions versus the consequences.

We learn through experiencing things. It is called applied learning. But our actions can either go into two ways; good outcome or bad outcome. What we should do is to be able to measure what actions we have to do against all the consequences whatever they may be, think before you act, so to speak.

2. Daydream.

Daydreaming can produce better and deep insights about life and about things we seldom think about. There we experience what we want and define what will happen. It can also make our minds be more creative. They say daydreaming is just a nuisance and a disturbance but actually when done appropriately will exceed that of the sharpest mind.

3. Answer thought-provoking questions.

You have got to challenge the limit of your mind by provoking how far your answers can go. How appropriate your answers are and how satisfying they can be to the question.

4. Learn to invent.

You have to discover how to do things your own way and invent it using different methods. In this way your mind will perceive all as different paths toward the same direction. This is a good way of saying that whatever path you choose, you will never get lost. Do not rely on pre-defined ways because sticking to this and only this will not get you anywhere should something come up.

5. Find different angles of the problem.

If you are presented with a problem it is better that you learn how to look at it in different angles so that you can solve it also in different ways. Looking at a problem in a defined manner will not bring as many solutions as there could be.

6. Comparison is better.

When given different situations compare them to one another. In the same manner when you are only given one option, you have you make another one and compare the two. This way your mind will seek better if not best option among all.

7. Definition of terms.

You need to be able to define the terms you will use in order for you to be clear on what you really mean. Sometimes words can be used wrongly that is why confusion and misunderstanding come into play.

8. Have several opinions.

If you are facing a certain issue, you will need different opinions regarding this to come up with your own way of handling the issue. Great minds are open to different outlooks.

9. Be able to put yourself in someone else's shoes.

Great minds do not think only of themselves and what they do. They also think of how someone will react, feel and think of the tables are turned.

10. Write stuffs.

The power of pen on paper can be greater than any great mind. They can remember even the faintest ideas while great minds can forget.

11. Think one step ahead.

How Should Students Spend Summer Vacation?

While the first summer days always begin with excitement and anticipation, nearly all parents eventually begin to worry about their childs summertime video game, television, and computer gaming habits. Many parents want to find ways to help children find an appropriate balance between leisure and learning.

Teachers, similarly, are actively striving to boost childrens educational interests over the summer, as a large proportion of teachers argue that engaging in summertime learning activities helps to improve a childs progress throughout his or her formative years. In fact, studies show that by the time a student reaches middle school, a loss of summer reading can potentially account for a two year set back in reading achievement!Fortunately, to offer parents guidance and support, public schools across the country have developed new agendas and programs to keep a childs mind active while away from school on summer vacation.

Summer Assignments

While presumably all public school teachers encourage students to engage in educational endeavors over the summer, some school leaders have taken this hope to the next level with required public school summer assignments.Summer assignments in the past have typically been reserved only for the highly ambitious Advanced Placement kids, but schools are now gradually extending various assignments for all students.
Specifically, as The Chicago Sun Times reports, over 170,000 public school students, ranging from grades kindergarten through 7th, are being provided with workbooks, lesson plans, and reading assignments for their summer vacations. With a new program aiming to avoid students' historical patterns of education-free summers, Chicago Public Schools have dedicated $2.7 million towards helping students remain engaged throughout the entire year. Also, since many gifted or advanced students are already required to complete summer assignments, this new initiative is aimed solely at the kids who are not required to attend mandatory summer school programs or activities.

Public School Initiatives

Adding to new summer assignment agendas, the Traverse City Record Eagle further highlights new public school initiatives. As the report reveals, Traverse City Area Public Schools, located in Michigan, has updated its summer reading lists for all elementary and high school students.Posted for viewers to review online, the lists help students peruse recommendations for children and college-bound senior graduates.Adding to this, Traverse City Schools has implemented several reading initiatives, ranging from reading programs in libraries to providing take-home books for children. In fact, some of the areas most successful programs involve providing the incoming high school freshman with reading clubs, which provide students with weekly prize drawings and raffles.

Staying Smart duringSummer...Online!

Also providing extended summer opportunities, Wooster Public Schools, in Ohio, have created online forums for advanced summer programs.According to The Daily Record, a collection of Wooster-area schools have developed the Virtual Learning Academy, which is operated through the Tri-County Educational Service Center. This program also helps students catch up if they have fallen behind during the regular academic year. For example, students who have failed a course can retake available sections in order to learn the required material at their own virtual pace.As students can complete their work anytime and at any location, students are able to work through the course material while participating in weekly, and mandatory, instructor check-ins to assess their progress.
